Introduction to Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy

Objectives: 

  1. Explore the history of ketamine and its use since its inception.
  2. Understand the pharmacological functioning of ketamine and its impact on mental health.
  3. Understand in which cases we can apply KAP and how to ensure safe use.
  4. Review the different models of psychedelic work and integration.

Agenda:

Introduction to ketamine – José Carlos Bouso (45 minutes)

  • A brief history of ketamine.
  • Pharmacology/mechanisms of action.
  • Brief review of the different methods of administration and dosage.

Activity (15 min): Discussion on myths and preconceptions about ketamine today.

Mental health applications – Joan Obiols (1 hour)

  • Indications and contraindications (beyond depression).
  • Differences between medical, recreational and therapeutic use.
  • Subjective effects of ketamine: dissociation and types of experiences.

Historical and current psychotherapeutic use – Irene Pérez (45 minutes)

  • Psychotherapeutic use: models used (psycholytic, psychedelic, etc.) and compatible psychotherapy styles (somatic integration, ACT, art therapy, etc.).
  • Experience with ketamine and ways to use it (soul-surfing, guided vs. unguided, etc.)

        30-minute break.

Protocols to ensure safe use – Marta Martín (45 minutes)

  • Evidence to mitigate risks and increase safety.
  • Patient preparation, set and setting.

The session and introduction to integration – Marta Martín and Irene Pérez (45 minutes)

  • Description of the session and its important variables (music, etc.).
  • Emotional support during the experience.
  • The integration of the experience.


Activity (15-25 minutes)

Discussion: presentation of several clinical cases and discussion of the approach.

Closing circle and questions (10 – 20 minutes)

Material:

  • Folder with some clinical documents (informed consent and guidelines).
  • Recent articles for bibliographic reading.
